While owner Katsunori Koshibe’s original Happy Kappa in Richmond focuses on authentic Japanese cuisine as a whole, his new Brunswick Street eatery specialises in the wonderful Japanese dish of ramen noodle soup, which is often overlooked for sushi and rice dishes that have become more common in the Western world. Deliciously salty and perfect for a winter’s day, Happy Kappa’s ramen comes in a range of traditional, provincial styles including a shoyu (soy sauce) ramen and a miso ramen that stems from the Nagano prefecture in central Japan. Koshibe recommends his signature Kappa ramen – a brave move on his part considering the delicate broth takes 12 hours to cook! Other Japanese noodles such as soba and the thicker udon noodle are also on offer, as are traditional meat and rice dishes like katsu don and terriyaki chicken.

Decorated with Japanese artwork, soft furnishings and patterned hand fans, Happy Kappa’s space is authentic, welcoming and delightfully kitsch. There ae dining tables for couples or large groups, and the well-priced takeaway menu will be a hit with those wanting to experience traditional Japanese flavours in the comfort of their own home. Ramen noodle soups starts at $8.80 so you don’t have to dig deep to enjoy this culinary feast in a bowl.
