PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe test of a good cafe is its coffee. At Gravy Train, you know that you have arrived at the right station when your coffee arrives complete with its own serving tray and glass of water. It’s this attention to detail that makes this Yarraville cafe such a local favourite. On a sunny day sit outside in the courtyard (but be quick, these are the most popular seats in the house) or simply relax inside and enjoy the train ride.
You’ll discover one of the best brekkies in town this side of the Westgate. You can’t go past the wattle seed granola with yogurt and poached fruits; although, the fat pancake with berry kissel comes a close second. For lunch, the pumpkin fritter stack is a popular choice as are the generous pides. Try the veggie frittata with beetroot relish. The changing specials board is worth watching. If it’s available, order the herb and parmesan crusted salmon with thyme and garlic potatoes topped with harissa mayo. Make sure you leave room for one of the cakes on display. The rosewater madeleines arouse all the memories of Proust and the blood plum and almond tart is well… just heavenly. The bread and cakes come from nearby Hausfrau bakery.
