This uniquely designed space on Melbourne’s bustling Hardware Lane has hints of a 1920s opium den, mixed with hidden pathways, nooks and crannies that are mysterious, inviting and even a little sinister. The 2007 Best Interior Design and Grand Prix Award is recognition of this truly intriguing and creative space.

And it isn’t just the design that’s impressive about Golden Monkey. The Asian tapas cocktail list is a blend of Chinese yum cha favourites and Japanese izikaya snacks that are versatile enough to complement after-work drinks or become a dinner banquet feast for a large group. The delicate shark-fin dumplings and miso honey dip served with fresh vegetables are among the more creative dishes, while traditional Shanghai dumplings and yakiniku beef represent the more traditional recipes. The edamame and old-fashioned prawn crackers partner perfectly with one of the local or international beers on offer, and always leave you wanting more. In true Golden Monkey style, one visit is just not enough as hidden treasures, such as the smashing cocktail list, continue to be unveiled. The “single blossom” with marmalade, house-made rosemary syrup and vodka, and the “sleeping dragon” with top-shelf cognac, walnut syrup and hints of fig, are only a sip of what the Golden Monkey bartenders can whip up!
