PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAGas (which is short for gastronomy) is one of South Melbourne's favourites. To be honest, this area is extremely well supplied with good eating of all kinds, but Gas offers something special, thanks to the energy of the Maskiell sisters. For a restaurant that claims to be very casual, it is very efficient. A big display cabinet full of delicious things to eat takes up most of one wall. There are a couple of tables towards the front with a few spilling out onto the pavement but most seating is at high tables equipped with stools.
The cooking style is broadly Mediterranean, which means that there are dishes with Spanish, Italian, Greek, Lebanese, North African and even Turkish influences. There are larger main courses - a chicken tagine, for example - but the strength here is in their array of smaller dishes. Perhaps some Greek cheese pastries served with a tomato relish, or some meatballs in a rich tomato sauce will tickle your fancy. Try the excellent tortillas or choose from a wide range of enterprising salads. Singles do well here, eating a fine breakfast or lunch at a bench while watching the world go by or reading the paper. Groups of more than two tend to order a big platter and a bottle of wine to share. Best of all is that you can organise a whole dinner party or function (in advance, please) or just pick up something on your way home to re-heat for dinner.
