The concept of Garden Tuscany is so simple it’s brilliant. Owners Sam and Stella Maurici loved the idea of a green, tranquil courtyard cafe inspired by their visit to Tuscany, so they created one - in their backyard. After years of entertaining family and friends in their idyllic courtyard, it seemed a natural progression to share this beautiful space with the public. Two years of wrangling for permits saw them finally open their doors at the end of 2010.

Enter via the cobbled laneway where a wall mural by local graffiti artist Jasper Killick depicts rolling Tuscan hills and quaint villages. It’s a precursor to the rustic oasis within, a charming space that seems a world away from the bustle of the everyday. Lush greenery spills from terracotta pots, hanging ferns, fruit trees and bright geraniums abound, while the air is redolent with the aromas of freshly ground coffee and pizza baking in the wood-fired oven.

It’s a family affair, with youngest son Lance behind the coffee machine, London-based son Ricki overseeing the website, Sam in the kitchen and Stella out front making guests welcome. She’s also responsible for the delicious selection of sweet delights at Garden Tuscany – mini cupcakes, decadent chocolates and truffles, fresh, fluffy scones and pizzelle (wonderfully light wafer biscuits). Lunchtime fare consists of salads and gourmet pizzas, cooked in the oven that forms the centrepiece of the courtyard. Try classic margherita; salsicca with spicy sausage, capsicum, oregano and fior di latte cheese; or patate pizza with thinly sliced potato, basil pesto and rosemary.

But it’s not just the food locals and visitors come for. The Mauricis offer true and heartfelt hospitality and you can see the love and care that has gone into every aspect of creating this beautiful spot. Children are made particularly welcome – happy, chocolate smeared faces are part and parcel with the relaxed, family vibe at this charming and unique café.
