PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIABecause Coyote Cafe is made up of twists and turns, rooms and anterooms, light-filled window tables and quiet cosy booths, it has the appeal of feeling like several different restaurants at once, and a little more intimate than it really is. The atmosphere is relaxed; the service is personal and friendly. Mexican love songs croon quietly in the background while flickering light from the dripping candelabra dances over mosaic walls. A fireplace to warm any Melbourne winter night together with a range of tequila to knock your sombrero off makes this an enjoyable dining experience.
Meals can be made to order, for spicy or mild tastes. Food here is a mix of traditional favourites and “new wave” Mexican style food, that draws on the essences of traditional Mexican cuisine and adds a modern twist. Watermelon ribs, for example, are a house original: Texas style baby pork ribs barbecued with a mild chilli watermelon baste and served with fat chips and salad. The fajitas here are famous, and rightly so as this writer discovered: char-grilled strips of chicken, beef and chorizo to make your own wraps, accompanied by tortillas, salsas and fillings. Vegetarians needn’t miss out with a great range of vegetarian options available. Mains range from about $18-$25. Special occasions and functions are welcome, with flexible menu options to choose from.
