LOCATIONNear the corner of Nicholson and Johnston Streets in Fitzroy, a short walk from an array of Brunswick Street bars, clubs and music venues.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAPlate-sharing restaurants may be the new black but this Latin quarter stalwart has been practising the tapas craft for over 15 years. Colmao Flamenco will remind you why this traditional Spanish style is such a wonderful way to enjoy delicious food and great company. The popular front dining room’s backed-up bookings list means seating at Colmao Flamenco is tight, but bite into one of the creamy chicken croquetas or the sizzling clay-pot prawns in olive oil and garlic, and you will be whisked from Johnston Street to Barcelona – and tight seating retreats to the back of the mind. By the time the chorizo al vino and the marinated octopus grace your boca, the atmosphere is delightfully cosy and perfectly intimate. Order your paella early as it takes a little while to cook, but this delectable and authentic seafood dish is well worth the wait.
Old Spanish festival prints and rustic wooden slats cover the walls of Colmao Flamenco’s front area, while the charming fireplace in the back room provides a soft, romantic glow for diners and private groups seeking a less-bustling. Although only open to the public for dinner, Colmao will open for lunch functions on request.
