Chai - Malaysian Mama's Kitchen is an unpretentious eatery just off Swanston St, a short walk from the University of Melbourne. The chilled vibe and good value menu has proved a hit with local students, but the flavorsome Malaysian dishes draw crowds from all walks of life. The servings here are generous and fresh. Look out for the daily specials, they'll allow you to try unusual ingredients like duck egg.

PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
This unpretentious eatery has been a popular destination for local residents, students and office workers alike since it opened in mid 2009. Chai offers authentic, tasty and reasonably priced Malaysian cuisine that keeps fans of its spicy flavours returning for more. It can be a little hard to spot from the street but within, its smart red and dark wooden decor gives it a bright and clean ambience that differs from many of the more functional cafeteria-style diners of this ilk. Owner Cindy Wong and chef Jackie Chow have had years of experience in similar establishments in Kuala Lumpur and bring not only authentic flavour, ingredients and freshness to many of the classic dishes of Malaysia but also a great deal of passion and enthusiasm.

Fresh, spicy aromas greet customers upon arrival and instantly get the salivary glands going. Rice dishes on offer include the traditional hawker style char siew and Hainanese chicken rice, a popular Kuala Lumpur dish, and bak kut teh rice; a nourishing, warming soup with herbs, pork and rice that instantly hints at its health-giving properties. Try the nasi lemak – coconut rice served with curry, sambal, boiled egg, peanut ikan bilis and cucumber – or the Assam laksa; a tangy fish broth flavoured with tamarind and served with shredded fish and rice noodles. All sauces, broths and braises are made from scratch, and Chai also offers traditional desserts including specialty sweet soups. Or you can complete your meal with a cup of Malaysian tea teh tarik. With meals less than the price of a movie ticket there’s no reason why a cinema outing or late night lecture shouldn’t include a visit to this smart, welcoming and authentic diner.

anita:

My dish was the Nasi Lemak and it was excellent — tasty and quite a large serving. It could have been a little more spicy but there was lots of sambal on the side. My colleagues were also tucking into their dishes with glee.review  08/06/2011
