PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAAlbert Park’s Carousel is more than just a grand and glam events venue. It also has a neighbouring cafe which is bright, easy-going and casual. The entry is to the side of the main building – follow the grapevine and you’re almost there. Once inside you’ll come fact to face with a counter that has lots of tempting things on display – thick-cut sandwiches, muesli, gorgeous cakes and a colourful selection of salads. The cafe is light-filled and airy, with stylish pale grey walls, clusters of bare-topped tables and a big central bench surrounded by cushioned stools. A few aspects of the decor could do with a makeover, but the view of Albert Park Lake, complete with all its birdlife, more than makes up for it.
The cafe at Carousel is a great place to bring kids after a walk around the park – settle in with a coffee for the grown ups and a fruit smoothie for the little ones. Breakfast is served all day, should you fancy the Carousel brekky early in the morning or later in the day. The lunch menu kicks in at noon and ranges from simple but tasty sandwiches such as corned beef, spinach and cheese on rye. The specials of the day are written on to the windows; maybe pumpkin and ricotta tortellini with tomato sauce, breadcrumbs and parmesan might catch your eye, or a porcini mushroom soup with salsa verde and a generous serving of sourdough bread. Their wine list is short and to the point and there is a good selection of other beverages.
