Situated in Melbourne’s Little Italy, aka Lygon Street, fondly referred to by the locals as Melbourne’s restaurant capital, Cafe Trevi holds its own among its many Italian neighbours. Specialising in casalinga, or authentic home-style Italian cooking, Cafe Trevi is a prime venue for a quick lunch, strong cup of coffee with friends, or a hearty meal and glass of vino with loved ones. Open since the early 1980s, Cafe Trevi’s upstairs dining room has recently been refurbished while the downstairs area retains its former warmth and hospitable charm.
Start with a steaming bowl of minestrone soup comprising mixed vegetables, tomato and basil, or the cozze all’Italiania: sauteed mussels in Napoli sauce with a touch of chilli. Snack on the namesake Trevi wood-fired oven pizza with tomato, bocconcini, artichokes, peppers, sliced tomato, olives and oregano, or the gourmet salvi with cheese, eggplant, artichokes and olives. For a main course sample the famed spaghetti and meatballs, the spinach and roast pumpkin risotto in a cream based sauce, or Cafe Trevi’s ever popular veal parmigianino with crumbed baby fillets of veal with melted mozzarella cheese and Napoli sauce. Cafe Trevi is fully licensed and offers BYO wine only with a $4 corkage per bottle.
