In a suburb overrun with quality Italian eateries, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd, but Cafe Italia achieves this effortlessly thanks to its contemporary design and minimalist approach. Choose to sit indoors among the plants and calming neutral tones, where in winter a fire always blazes, or outdoors in the sandstone courtyard at linen-free tables with overhead heaters for those cooler Melbourne days.
Head chef James Meehan has put together a menu of classic dishes that won’t disappoint. Start with an entree of minestrone Genovese finished with a dollop of fresh pesto, or the pesciolini fritti (fried whitebait served with rocket and parmesan salad and garlic mayo). Follow with a hearty serve of fresh, house-made gnocchi tossed with a gorgonzola cheese sauce, a selection of tempting pizzas, or the dried porcini and fresh mushroom risotto. Other main courses include the vitello (saltimbocca baby veal with sage and pancetta, white wine butter sauce and a spinach garnish), or the pollo alla diavola (chicken breast brushed with garlic and chilli, grilled and served with peperonata). Finish with the house specialty, the Italian dessert of choice, tiramisu. The Australian friendly wine list offers a select few by the glass.
