PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAMelbourne’s laneways are full of action when it comes to cafes. Postal Lane, which ran behind the GPO when it was still the main post office, has become an eating stretch – and, like all laneways, is still a thoroughfare. Ca’ de Vin (House of Wine) is the biggest of the three eating places in this lane. Enter from Bourke Street, and wait to be seated at one of the dark timber tables. It’s actually all pretty cosy, with awnings that protect from the weather, and lots of big bright posters. Blackboards list specials and wines by the glass. The atmosphere, especially at weekday lunchtimes, can be hectic.
The menu offers lots of choices that are solidly Mediterranean without being tied down to any single country. Start with one of the meze selections – perhaps saganaki or lamb kofta. There are hearty main courses on the specials board, or go for one of the pizzas. They’re served on a wooden board, and they’re good – thin crusted, with a light but flavourful topping. The waiters here are usually good. Ca’ de Vin is a good option for coffee during the day or for a meal after work, and is set to expand into the Bourke Street Mall.
