PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIASituated on busy King Street, Bergerac Restaurant has been a strong contender for quite some time. A favourite long lunch spot for local office workers, Bergerac is as close to a French brasserie as you’ll get this side of the city. The decor is warm and authentically French with rich leather banquettes, linen-clad tables, long swooping drapes and the immediately recognisable French accented staff who dote on you with fast and efficient service.
In keeping with the traditional French theme the menu at Bergerac is both extensive and authentic utilising many favourites with a few less common options. Start with the soupe a l’ognion (French onion soup served with cheese croutons) or perhaps the escargots a la Bourguigonne (a dozen garlic snails served in an earthenware ramequin). Follow with a main of bouillabaisse royale (fish fillets, prawns, scallops, scampi and mussels in fish and tomato stock with fennel and saffron served with aioli and croutons) or the steak aux deux poivres (a peppered eye fillet in a cream and brandy sauce with black and green peppercorns). Be sure to leave room for dessert, yet another thing the French do well, with tempters like the classic creme brulee with vanilla bean ice-cream. The wine list has plenty of Australian and French varieties to choose from.
