PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAIf you fancy a little southern Italian fare without having to leave the comfort of St Kilda then look no further than this trattoria. Specialising in southern Italian fare, a region known for its simple and fresh cuisine, and combining traditional cooking methods from the north, Bar Santo has created a no fuss, flavour filled menu that delivers.
Tuesday to Friday try the ‘Italian lunch on the run’, where $13 gets you a choice of mains such as traditional spaghetti bolognaise or the risotto of the day, with a glass of house wine. From the a la carte menu start with an entree of calamari fritti (fresh calamari fried golden and served with wild roquette, lemon and homemade mayonnaise) or meatballs served with tomato salsa. Follow with a main of scaloppine di pollo al pane verde (tender chicken breast rolled in herbs and breadcrumbs, sauteed and served with lemon, potato and vegetables) or the osso buco di vitello (tender veal osso buco, slow cooked and served with mashed potato). For dessert try the affogato (a shot of coffee over vanilla ice cream) or the traditional tiramisu (sponge with mascarpone, coffee and liqueur). The concise but reasonably priced wine list matches the menu to perfection.
