Take one former fire station, add experienced owners, and watch it catch on fire – metaphorically, that is. Barrio restaurant – the name means “neighbourhood” in Spanish – is a terrific addition to the busy stretch of Upper Heidelberg Road. The old converted building has lovely proportions with evidence of its former life showing up here and there. The main dining room has white painted timber ceilings and walls, a black chandelier and dark wooden floorboards. The tables are neatly set with white cloths; the excellent attention to detail is apparent in the quality glassware, cutlery and even the salt and pepper grinders.

The menu is essentially modern Mediterranean, covering Spain and Italy with a detour through Morocco. The entree of chicken bisteeya is a terrific example of how it works; three small pies filled with minced chicken are dusted with cinnamon and a hint of sugar, and served with a fresh salad of apple and mint. Main courses might include pappardelle with a ragu of slow-cooked rabbit and porcini mushrooms. Desserts will see you spooning in to a classic pannacotta with roasted rhubarb crumble. Add a good wine list, seamless service and a friendly atmosphere, and you’ve got a winning restaurant which will have you sliding down poles.
