Profiled by de Groots Media This smart Malaysian restaurant is on the beach side of the cinema, so it’s not quite as trendy as most of Bay Street. But it’s got the lot: useful location, smart decor, friendly atmosphere, a serviceable wine list, family-friendly hours and budget-friendly prices.
It looks like a much more expensive restaurant with its polished timber floors, kind lighting, white cloths with paper overlays, good glasses and the eccentric decorative touch of balsa-wood models of everything from the Eiffel tower to a dragon. (The owner likes making them, apparently).
The menu offers a broad range of food from Malaysia and environs, such as Malaysian achar (a spicy pickled appetiser), Chinese sweet corn soup and pandan chicken. The roti and noodle dishes are generous and sometimes fiery – watch out for the tom yum seafood noodle soup and the chilli prawns. The tofu goreng, a kind of fried tofu salad sandwich, is an excellent starter for vegetarians who are generally very well catered for here. So are beef lovers: try the nasi lemak, or beef rendang. The wine list is reasonable and there’s a good range of beers, with take-away available so you don’t have to miss Grey’s Anatomy.
