The Bund in Shanghai combines excellent and exciting Shanghainese cooking with menu side-trips to Peking and the tingling spiciness of Szechuan. Housed in a small cottage with an adequate wine list, this Sandy bay restaurant provides one of the best and most varied Chinese dining experiences in Hobart.

Chef Ken Sen is originally from the predominantly Chinese Cholon district of Vietnam. He worked at a now defunct Cantonese restaurant in North Hobart before travelling to Shanghai to learn how they do things there. Shanghainese cooking, he says, involves more slow braising, the addition of a greater range of spices to the Chinese trinity of ginger, spring onions and garlic, and the greater use of wheat products, soy and sesame oil than is common in typical Cantonese cooking.

Shanghai’s proximity to China’s northern wheat belt is reflected in a fascinating dish of soy-braised wheat gluten with dried lily buds and mushrooms, as well as in thicker noodles and a glutinous spring onion cake made using wheat rather than rice flour. There’s also a wonderfully crisp, lacquered Peking duck. From the western province of Szechuan there’s a spicy hot-sour seafood soup, deliciously light and refreshing spicy pickled cabbage and a chilli beef soup which, on the menu, carries a red three-chilli warning sign, but is beautifully deep and complex and tingling rather than volcanic. Housed in a small cottage with an adequate wine list, The Bund provides one of the best and most varied Chinese dining experiences in Hobart.

The Bund in Shanghai - User Reviews

Wardlaw family:

This is one of our favorite restaurants for special occasion dining and as mentioned by a previous patron, compares very favorably with feted mainland counterparts such as the Flower Drum and locally the Mee Wah, at a more accessible price. We have always found the service first class, especially the graciousness of the lady maitre'd. The duck is excellent in all its forms and the vegetarian selections are always favourites - we never forget the eggplant fritters. It's quite an elegant setting but at the same time our (well behaved) children have always been made to feel very welcome.review 04/05/2012

G:

The WORST restaurant I have been to in a very long time. When we arrived at 7pm we had a fairly large table (17 people). No one came to take our order for an hour and a half. Then we were told that if we ordered from the main menu it would be another hour and a half wait and so we should order the banquet. Which we did. $35 per person. Another hour and it came out and it was pathetic. they didn't give out enough of each dish for 17 people and what they did bring out was not much. Certainly not worth 35 per head and I wont be going back!review 18/03/2012

Visitors from the mainland we have dined at the Flower Drum and Silks in Melbourne, enjoying the whole experience immensley. The Bund in Shanghai compares most favourably with both these famed restaurants. A must have is the Peking duck. Bean curd spring rolls and the lettuce cups are also high on the list, but I must say there really has not been a meal that we haven't enjoyed. The friendly owner and staff make our family always feel welcome and we make a point of always dinning here when in Hobart. We stumbled across this restaurant by accident, and are so very glad we did!review 07/02/2012

We called in for a quick meal - without making a prior reservation. It was lucky for us that we were early. This is a popular restaurant, and for good reason. Excellent staff service and tasty food. My partner ordered the Pu Dong duck and she loved it. In her words: 'it was incredible'. I ordered beef with black bean sauce (a bit of standard fare) and it was good but the quantity was too much for one person and I should have shared with partner. However, she wasn't really up for sharing the Pu Dong. Go the Pu Dong!review 08/10/2011

I have had Peking Duck throughout China and Hong Kong and was looking for a restaurant in Hobart that served tasty Peking Duck in the traditional fashion. The Bund in Shanghai met all of my expectations. The duck skin was rolled in the pancakes for us at tableside and the sauce was as flavorful as any in Asia. There were choices on the second course service of duck meat, which we non-traditionally chose to have with fried rice. It turned out to be an excellent choice. The wine list was very complete and reasonable and the decor of the restaurant is elegant in non-pretentious fashion. I highly recommend Chef Ken Sen's Peking duck.review 20/11/2007
