Unreformed, ungentrified and charming, this old city pub has had 183 years to get its steaks right - and they’re now possibly the best in the state. They pull a good beer here too. The Shamrock Hotel restaurant in Hobart maintains much of its original atmosphere and charm with open fireplaces, cosy spaces and lead-light windows.

Opened in 1823 as the Britannia Inn, and holding one of the oldest continuous licenses in Australia, this is still a traditional inner-city, corner pub. The outside has had a few make-overs during its time but inside it’s still ungentrified, blokey and unpretentious, retaining much of its original atmosphere and charm in its open fireplaces, cosy spaces, lovely lead-light windows and patina’d bar. And the food is fairly ungentrified retro pub grub too – weiner-schnitzel, chicken parmigiana, chips with everything – served to the bar or up a few stairs in a dimly-lit, old-fashioned “dining room”.

But, if you’re looking for a steak, you won’t find any better in Hobart, possibly not in Tasmania. Thick, properly aged rumps, porterhouses, scotches, T-bones and fillets, nicely charred, consistently cooked as ordered, and, depending on the cut, with what the wowsers say is an unhealthy but nonetheless delicious strip of crisped fat still attached. Give the packaged mushroom and peppercorn sauces a miss, they’re as gluggy as anywhere else. And, if you choose vegetables, you get what you deserve. But the salads are beautifully fresh and properly dressed and those ubiquitous chips live up to the steaks. And there’s even real English mustard.

The Shamrock hotel, is the best venue in town. Its quality staff, especially the family are a delight to talk too, and will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your time there. The meals are exquisite, and for only $10 what else is better. They have a fantastic range of beers on tap, or many others from the fridge. As stated the owner and her husband are friendly. The food quality is good. The male bar staff provide excellent conversation. Unfortunately, some of the female staff are very unattentive...and really need some people and food management skills. ("stealing" chips from the plate before serving is a big NO NO!) review 26/03/2012

We had the privilege of dining in the bar of this hotel for two nights in a row whilst staying in the city. Brilliant atmosphere with a lovely open fire. Just what you need on these cold winter nights. Bar meals only $10 with several dishes to choose from. The food was fantastic and definitely plenty of it. Steaks cooked to perfection and served with a very fresh and large salad and chips. The owner is very friendly as are all the bar staff in general, particularly the barman who went out of hi s way to make sure we enjoyed our drink (even to the extent of pouring a four leaf clover design on the top of a pint of Guiness!). I will be telling everyone I know about the food and service and friendly atmosphere. Thank you for an excellent meal. review 19/08/2011
