This new, mod-minimalist eatery raises the culinary bar and brings inner-city excellence to the hitherto battered fish and big Mac takeaway dessert of the suburbs. Salt Cafe Restaurant in Moonah is ultra-modern and slimline minimalist in stainless steel and black.

Ultra-modern and slimline minimalist in stainless steel and black, this street-front cafe/restaurant is the latest to take a taste of inner city elegance and good food to the suburbs. This is the second venture for the team from Dukkah, one of the best and most innovative cafes in central Hobart, and it has been chock-full since they pulled their first latte and served their first risotto with shaved parmesan and white truffle oil. Like the original, breakfasts move beyond the raisin toast and ubiquitous eggs Benedict league to such things as spicy homemade baked beans and bacon and chorizo omelettes, while at lunch there’s not a focaccia stack or chicken Caesar in sight.

The more extensive dinner menu runs from first-rate Asian-accented oyster, prawn, mussel and scallop dishes to a smoked paprika-spiked paella; an excellent creamy mushroom risotto; garlic and rosemary lamb rump; and, of course, a porterhouse with rustic mash and red wine jus. But, as so often the case, it’s the behind-the-scenes-things that tell of the care and quality that goes into Salt – the homemade tartare sauce, aioli and nam jim dressings, the freshness of their fish and seafood, the excellence of their coffee and the smooth professionalism of the whole operation. All good stuff.

We are breakfast regulars at Salt, but tonight I took my wife there for dinner and we were both blown away. My wife is vegetarian, and after looking at the menus of 4 restaurants in the vicinity, we settled on Salt, she chose the gnocchi. Initially this was due to a lack of options, but once delivered she loved it, one of the best meals out she has ever had. I had the 12hr Braised lamb shoulder. Unreal. I have never tasted meat like it, I have paid twice the price in restaurants on the mainland for food that was not a scratch on this. Absolutely reccomend. review 27/07/2012

“Wow!!” is all I can say about this Cafe Restaurant experience. It has beautiful dining and service, so my partner and I are now once a week regulars, either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We try to dine out and experience the beautiful food around Tasmania but we just can’t stop coming back to Salt. Try the Billie Billie Shiraz, mmmm – very yummy! I always have a glass... And an after meal coffee always finishes the meal perfectly. review 27/06/2011
