This is the sort of small, family-run restaurant you might happily discover off the grand Boulevards and facing picturesque village squares in France. The sort of place where the patron is in the kitchen and madame on the floor, where families, friends and neighbours gather to celebrate life’s little successes and memorable occasions. Which is exactly how masses of Hobart locals treat it too. Almost 14 years after opening their doors, Jean-Claude and Julie Rival’s restaurant has been elevated to that state of culinary grace, an institution, and is more popular than ever.

Their secret? Nothing more than honest, unpretentious, unfussed, perfectly cooked French provincial food, consistency, charming service and Jean-Claude’s skills honed at his grandmother’s stoves in Alsace and subsequently in Michelin-starred bistros in Paris. Hand-made ravioli pillows might come with sweet onion and sage filling. Terrines are truly rustic, mellow and deeply flavoured. Sweet golden carrots accompany a shin of beef simply moistened with the braising stock. And you won’t find a better bearnaise sauce anywhere. All you need to complete the meal is a bottle or three of chunky red wine and a sticky for the wonderful desserts.

Le Provencal was a beautiful experience. The moment we stepped in the door we were warmly greeted by our waitress, and transported by the colourful décor to country France. Our hostess was genuinely friendly and attentive, and the service was quick and impeccable, particularly since the restaurant is solely owned and operated by a French couple. For main we ate the melt-in-your-mouth eye fillet steak with a creamy bernaise sauce, and a Moroccan chicken dish with vegetables, cous-cous and spices that were meant to be married together. Very generous servings; we were too full for dessert which was a shame. Overall a delicious meal, great service and a quiet, intimate atmosphere, faultless. Our visit to Le Provencal lived up to our expectations. The shared pork terrine was excellent and more than enough as an appetiser for two. The duck and the grilled beef fillet that followed were of the same high standard. The beef came with bernaise sauce (a house speciality), accompanied by a crisp salad and delicious fries. The duck was complemented by an apple pancake and croquette potato. A side order of seasonal vegetables was beautifully presented and tasted great. The portions were generous - too generous. No one likes to leave good food uneaten but there was no way either of us could consume the amounts we were served. Portions about half the size (of everything) would have been more appealing and, dare I say it, more healthy.review 13/11/2008
