A Hobart restaurant institution that first swung its doors open in 1965, Don Camillo has now been handed over to the second generation and given new life with more modern interpretations of the Italian classics.

Opened in 1965, Don Camillo was one of Hobart’s earliest Italian eateries. Since then The Don, as it’s known, has become a Hobart institution. As someone who first dined there as an 18 year old recalls “It was the place to see and be seen or, for many, if it was that sort of date, not to be seen, sitting in a corner so dark you needed a cigarette lighter to read the menu by”. The original kitchen mamas retired after 30 years, while the last one, Lina Di Martino, bought the restaurant in 2002. At Christmas 2009, she cooked her final meal and passed The Don onto her two sons, Dino and Graziano.

After a month of renovations, they opened at the end of January 2010 with chef Carlo Venettacci – young, passionate and, coming full circle, the nephew of Maria Venettacci who was in the kitchen when the doors opened in 1965. So the restaurant is now firmly in the hands of a second generation with a new menu giving a modern lift to some of the old Italian classics and aiming to attract a younger custom that Dino hopes will see the restaurant through another 50 years. Try the excellent risotto al coniglio, the colourful, beautifully cooked pollo involtini or the chunky, trencherman minestrone with a glass or two from the small but well-selected wine list before finishing with a knock-out affogato.

Don Camillo - User Reviews

John Ashworth:

I have very fond memories of Don Camillo. My late wife (Barbara)and I were married in Hobart in 1973. We often walked up Queen Street to your restaurant's takeaway counter (which at that time was at the rear), and ordered your Minestrone Soup, which was the best we have ever tasted. We dined in your restaurant on many occasions, with Barbara ordering Crayfish Mornay and I inverably ordered steak, well done. Barbara has said to me that she had not tasted a better Crayfish Mornay anywhere than at Don Camillo's. We came to WA in 1976 because of her poor health, but up until her death in 2004, we often spoke of Don Camillo's of Magnet Court, and the high standard of food and great service. If I am lucky to visit Tasmania again, I will certainly make it a point of treating myself again with good memories and good food.review  25/11/2011

We booked by phone 40 minutes prior to arriving at the restaurant and sat down on arrival. The restaurant was full on arrival at 7.30pm. Over peak holiday time I'd advise booking a couple of days in advance (it'll be worth it). Clients were still arriving after 9pm. Entrees of Bruschetta Al Pomodora with melted mozzarella on grilled tomato with a drizzling of olive oil and Ostrich which appeared to be oysters kilpatrick. Both were shared and tasted delicious. The oysters were the largest I have come across. My wife had Pollo Involtini for her main which consisted of pancetta wrapped chicken breasts stuffed with bocconcini and spinach and gnocchi with a sauce of creamy basil and pine nuts. I had the filetto which was eye fillet steak on a bed of mashed potato and red wine jus. The steak was cooked to perfection, the chicken likewise. Desserts were Tiramisu and Strawberry Panna Cotta. Both were made in house, the Tiramisu was to kill for. The atmosphere was a bit noisy but not overly so. Indication was that everybody was enjoying themselves. A good selection of Italian and local wines complimented the food. The staff were very attentive, knowledgeable of the meals and very friendly. The dishes arrived in a timely manner and not rushed. All in all, a very enjoyable evening.review  07/06/2011
