Chon-Na-Kan is a small restaurant in Sandy Bay where the smiling service is as bright, fresh and authentic as the spicing of the food. The restaurant’s Thai name, I’m told, means getting better and better.

The restaurant’s Thai name, I’m told, means getting better and better. And the part owner who runs the floor is called Eark, which I’m also told is the equivalent of our “haha” – the sound Thai cartoon characters make when they laugh. Both of which are appropriate since this unpretentious and unadorned, brightly lit little place is already very good, the food comes with Eark’s happy, smiling service and, most of it at least, will put a smile on your face too.

I doubt there’s a better, lighter, more spicily perfumed and flavoured tom yum or a better country-style Penang curry in the city. Or, for that matter, a more authentic Massaman beef curry or more delicious pad Thai noodle stir-fry; the sauce for which, the Thai chef says, is authentically made simply from palm sugar, nam pla and tamarind. The fish cakes and sweet chilli sauce the restaurant makes itself are also excellent, while the thick pastry of the house-made vegetarian spring rolls and chewy beef in the pad kra prao were less successful. But, across the board, the flavours and spicings are spot on, so clean, bright and fresh that a two-and-a-half year old at the next table was overheard to say, “There’s ginger in this.”

Chon-Na-Kan - User Reviews

Lindsey:

We moved to Hobart two years ago and have struggled to find a decent Thai here. While nothing seems to equal Thailand or places like Spice I Am in Sydney, this little restaurant serves up the best Thai we've found in Hobart. The curries are tasty and they are very obliging with dietary restrictions (some of our family require gluten free). I would recommend them if you feel like Thai in Hobart. And their prices are very reasonable, unlike many of the Thai restaurants here.review 20/05/2012

Just dined at chon na kan under this sites recommendation but were very disappointed. Fish cakes were a bit rubbery and chicken ginger dish was bland and chicken was dry. My friend had basil and chilli stir fry which also bland. Very disappointed.review 25/03/2012

Agreed. There is a lack of Thai places east of Hobart CBD but thankfully this one is superb. I was also concerned when I saw how empty it was but I'm so glad I tried it out. Food is amazing. Fresh and authentic, service is very friendly and the prices are great. Simple yet clean restaurant which makes take always perfect as they are very fast. In fact I'm about to order some right now.review 20/11/2011

Chon-Na-Kan deserves more customers. On the night we were there, we shared the restaurant with only one other table. After searching diligently online we couldn't find an independent review to encourage our patronage. So we bravely entered and were glad we did. The fish cakes and spring rolls were nicely cooked - no rubberiness or oiliness here. The pad thai with its eight exceptionally fresh prawns was very good. So be brave and enter, I am sure you won't be disappointed.review 13/10/2011
