PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIARobe locals are a lucky bunch. They have majestic beaches on their doorstep and charming eateries lining their main drag. Whether you have worked up an appetite ferreting around the galleries or playing in the surf, a refuelling at Vic Street Pizzeria will bring in waves of content. It is owned by two couples – Paul and Louise Hounslow and Sean and Sally Emery – and both sets welcome diners at all times of the day. The dining area is a large space set with laminate-look tables and surprisingly comfortable plastic chairs. Floorboards are underfoot and cooling ceiling fans spin among retro lighting. A corner offers mocha lounges garnished with cherry-red cushions and ottomans for those chilling with a glass of vino. The mini wine list pays homage to some of South Australia’s beauties; however, an Italian red is always on hand too.
Gourmet pizzas are the business with both chefs battling it out with their namesake creations. The “Houndy” will win meat-lovers over with pepperoni and chicken layered on roast capsicum, and fresh and semi-dried tomato. Those keen on crustaceans will applaud the “Seanus”. The sweet prawns melt with the salty pancetta in a tasteful topping of bocconcini, basil and chilli. (Gluten-free bases are also available.) If the sea air has inspired you and more seafood appeals – after all, when in Robe – you may like to take your tastebuds for a dip in the pasta marinara. Mussels, squid, prawns and optional anchovies lurk deliciously in the depths of its rose sauce. The house salad is a novel delight with its Champagne dressing. Further pleasing is the dessert cabinet stocked with house-made treats of truffles, tiramisu and pannacottas.
