Piper’s of Penola

Having purchased many a bottle of wine from the wonderful Coonawarra region we thought we would take a trip for a weekend. As we strolled down the main street late in the afternoon looking for a corner store to get some provisions we took a detour up a side street. We stood outside what appeared to be a small chapel. What a lovely building we thought. We took a look at the old fashioned noticed board to see that it was in fact a restaurant and the menu was posted. Delicious is what sprung to mind, so we took the number, gave it 30 mins til 6pm and called. As luck would have it they had a table free, so we snapped it up. It was a little while back that we went to Pipers, so I can’t remember what we had, however suffice to say the food was outstanding. Delicious, well presented, fresh, well devised, and a great deal of invention. We didn’t know what to expect, yet we didn’t expect to find what would be a 5 star restaurant in any city around the world. The service was impeccable; the wine list small yet covered all the bases; however it did seemed a little disappointing considering it is right in the heart of a fantastic red wine growing region. The only other point to mention is that it was so good that we decided to hang the idea of cooking the next night and ate at Pipers again. Once again, simply brilliant. Can’t fault it, and I hope it’s not long before I visit the region and Pipers again. 22/06/2010
