PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAThe Place Next Door was once a corner petrol station dispensing fuel to passing cars. Today, however, it pumps creamy coffee and refuels with filling food. Should your pooch care to join you for cake and coffee, a section of the decking has been reserved for such occasions. It is also the smoking area, if Fido is yet to kick the habit. The floor, tables and chairs are wooden and of similar hew but this starkness is alleviated at night when the dining room is dressed for dinner with tablecloths, cutlery and napkins.
Leisurely breakfasts can be enjoyed at The Place Next Door daily; the Turkish bread with your eggs benedict soaks up the liquid gold hollandaise. Later in the day, the taste platter is popular with its spread of salt and pepper calamari, dip, frittata, garlic prawns and marinated lamb. Calamari and prawns also beckon from a risotto with spinach and Rose sauce as does the gourmet pizza with anchovies and basil. Atlantic salmon is served on mash with wholegrain mustard hollandaise and fish comes tempura style with homemade tartare or beer-battered with lemon and lime aioli. Grain-fed scotch fillet with roasted field mushrooms and garlic butter begs for a glass of Wirra Wirra Church Block to accompany it. Fill it up and go, go, go.
