PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAA matron of old-money Burnside, The Feathers Hotel caters for all generations of the eastern suburbs set with its old school charm. The legendary Penfolds family first owned the restaurant and homage is paid to this piece of history through the wine list which features Penfolds Grandfather Port. At $33 a glass, it is a rather fancy way to end your meal but the worldly decor of Feathers encourages little acts of opulence. The two-storey building is of Edwardian design and offers boutique accommodation and function rooms. Restaurant manager Juliana Hatherly sets tables as if they are her own. Linen cloths and fresh cut flowers add a touch of elegance while padded chairs, carpet and glowing wall lamps contribute to the room’s comfort and cosiness.
Spare yourself the chore of preparing a Sunday roast. The Feather’s smorgasbord has a hot carvery, which indulges with three succulent options; sirloin of beef is served with a classic Yorkshire pudding, turkey breast can be gobbled down with cranberry sauce and seasoned pork loin tempts with its naughty but nice crackling. The cold buffet boasts Gulf prawns, continental meats and a leg ham platter. Soup, salads and hot entrees add more weight to the table. Desserts may bring fresh cream gateaux, pastries or chocolate mousse to your lips. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait until Sunday to feast on these delights. Smorgasbord spoils are served on weekday lunches and dinners and an a la carte menu is offered through the week and on Saturday evenings.
