The old-fashioned iron lamp above the door alludes to an era of long ago, when people wore dinner suits and manners were as important as life and death (well social death anyway). There was a way of doing things properly and that is the way they’re still done at The Chesser Cellar.

Its famous lunch buffet, serving a selection of cold meats and seasonal antipasto dishes and salads, is available from noon on weekdays and has proved very popular with the business set. There is also an a la carte menu offering dishes such as Chesser’s traditional steak and kidney pie with mash potato and steamed broccolini or the braised lamb shank with red wine glaze and rosemary roast potatoes. For something quick, the adjoining cafe is open from 8am for breakfast and has a very reasonably priced lunch menu.

Most important of all, however, is the cellar. Recently renovated to become a private dining room, the cellar still contains a large collection of reds and whites lining the walls waiting for their turn to be savoured.
