Most people associate the Austral Hotel with crowds, live bands and its happening Rundle Street terrace full of uni folk swigging Coopers. But the swag of locals who frequent its private courtyard and long bar know there’s always good food to be has at the Austral too. Lately, the Bunka bar’s modern menu has been enticing students and pub-goers alike to take part in its schnitzels, steak sandwiches and pub grub style snacks. Despite the menu’s gastro pub lingo the fare is pretty standard stuff, but after four beers this type of food - with plenty of deep fried content - really hits the spot.

The calamari and spinach lasagne are both winners if you don’t feel like red meat, while the rest of the menu includes wide ranging choices from fish and chips to the curry of the day. I can’t go past the old reliable chicken schnitzel parmagiana (the true test of any pub) while my friend tucks into a medium rare 300 gram sirloin with a bowl of wedges. Both pass the test. Generous serves are delivered piping hot, plus we don’t have to wait long for our food, making us both satisfied customers. The dining room itself is large, with wooden floor boards and walls that are known for displaying the odd art show. With open fires in winter and a sunny terrace on offer in summer, The Austral Hotel is not just great for a drink - but dinner at the Bunka too.
