I often marvel at the phrase that “the simple things in life are often the best”. Nowhere is this more evident than at Stanley’s Fish Cafe on Gouger Street, Adelaide. The cuisine at this eatery touches the hearts of Adelaide diners year round. Not over done or underplayed, the stunning seafood on offer at Stanley’s is a tribute to people who really know what they are doing. Sure, they are not breaking new ground with their menu of seafood classics, but Michael and Jenny Longbottom are happy living off the sweet beauty of their exceptional produce.

The dining room is very simple, with laminex tables and a nice outdoor courtyard, but generally people visit Stanley’s for the great quality food and laid back feel. Daily specials feature all the spectacular swordfish or chill crab the heart may desire, while delicious standards like garfish, calamari and prawns are guaranteed to satisfy. Whole fish, including barramundi, can be served to your liking, while succulent Moreton Bay bugs are without doubt a specialty of the house. Lunch is a secret for the locals who know. Don’t forget to experience the terrific weekday meals starting at around the $12 mark for something light and luscious.

Have been going to Stanleys for 20 years or so and it has recently declined to very poor. Had to send my last meal there back as was fish fillet thrown on the grill frozen, and was soggy and raw in the center, meal was not charged for after some argument, and calamari also served was not skinned and had like rubber bands in it, after pointing it out I was told that they didnt have time to clean it properly and deal with it. SORRY, NO!!! review 19/04/2012

The service was excellent and the food was good. We both especially appreciated the chowder. I always associate chowder with American ethnic food and I have tried it in San Francisco, but this was superior. review 17/03/2012

Hugely disappointing, had read loads of reviews and decided to try it. Service was slow to none existent, waited 25 minutes for a drink order to be taken.a further 15 for the food order to be taken. Food was average at best, bland and luke warm, and overpriced. Staff completely not bothered. A restaurant trading on its previous reputation. Ate at the star of Siam the night before which is opposite - food outstanding service efficient and $30 cheaper. review 22/02/2012
