For one of the best Japanese restaurant experiences in Australia, visit the Shiki in Adelaide. It is a 21-year-old, multi award-winning venue, that’s sure to knock your socks off with the flashing and slashing antics of its teppanyaki chefs.

LOCATION
Located in the heart of the city on the Upper Lobby Level of InterContinental Adelaide.

PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
The Shiki is a special occasion restaurant. Even if you do not arrive with one to celebrate, you will have experienced one by the time you leave. Teppanyaki cooking is a spectacular performance to witness. Adelaide’s theatres are minutes away, but surely their productions are not as flamboyant as those staged here. In an expansive room with picture window views of the River Torrens, copper range hoods hover over open teppanyaki kitchens. Ten of your nearest and hungriest can sit around a gleaming hotplate, manned by your personal chef. With flashing and slashing of steely blades, you are treated visually and gastronomically. There are also regular tables suited to personal dining and a dedicated tempura bar. Prepare to be entertained under subtle spotlights with bamboo, Japanese ceramics, teapots and artful samurai pieces. Glance around the room – you may be sharing it with Aussie rockers AC/DC or the less loud, but much loved, Deltra Goodrem.

The a la carte selection whets your appetite with beauties such as grilled Atlantic salmon belly with ponzu sauce, Kangaroo Island lobster with avocado salad and deep-fried bean curd with bonito flakes and dashi. Tempura pleases with soft shell crabs with spicy miso dressing. Sushi and sashimi features yellow fin tuna and teppanyaki dishes wield the likes of Wagyu beef and crocodile. Throw in garlic or prawn and pine nut fried rice for good measure. Desserts delight with green tea-ramisu and shochu panna cotta. If you have won big at the casino next door, have an elite Shiki set menu. Here come big-gun plates of seared Coffin Bay oysters with soy butter sauce, steamed Moreton Bay bugs with truffle butter and Queensland barramundi in a mushroom broth. Wine packages are offered to match along with sake, martinis and cocktails to mix things up a little.

Great to be entertained by seeing the food cooked right in front of you. Best quality again. My husband has been a fan of this place for years.
