This no-fuss eatery is located in Renaissance Arcade off Rundle Mall. Wooden tables and metal-backed chairs are arranged for a simple, clean visit. Void of utensils, napkins and drink-ware, chopsticks or cutlery come with your meal. Colourful cornflower-blue menuboards are chalked up with Eastern and Western translations. A framed portrait of all dishes allows you to window shop before deciding. Order at the counter or choose from ready-made dishes in the bain-marie. Lunchtime specials are waiting for those wanting an immediate dine-in meal or something to take back to the office.

Owners Kim and Ida Tse pride themselves on providing quick, authentic food made with fresh produce. Roasts are a house specialty. Chef Kim insists on using quality meats and cooks them daily. Get here too late in the afternoon and you risk missing out. There is no such thing as yesterday’s leftovers because quality is prioritised over quantity. There are around a dozen wonton, laksa and dumpling soups to slurp your way though and just as many noodle and rice plates plump out the menu. Seafood mee goreng is popular with its prawns, calamari and fish cake woven through golden-fried noodles. Textural crunch is added with shredded iceberg lettuce and snow-white bean sprouts. Try the mutabak roti for a dish in itself. Filled with beef and egg, accompany it with a traditional gado gado and you have a satisfying meal. Ching chow (grass jelly) puts a different spin on beverages or perhaps some Chinese herb tea will have you leaving with a peaceful mind and tummy.

Penang Hawkers Corner - User Reviews

mentasm:

The old spoons and metal forks are back! I eat there at least twice a week. I really do get addicted to some of their tasty dishes. Reccomend getting ther as close to midday as possible as it can get a little manic later.review  16/03/2012

Malaysian food lover:

I always like the food in Penang Hawkers Corner. It is always quick and tasty, but horror of horrors they replaced all their normal cutlery with useless, weak plastic forks and spoons. I am afraid I will take that into consideration and won't be going back as often.review  17/01/2012
