LOCATIONLocated on Gouger Street, close to the Central Market.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThere are not too many restaurants on Gouger Street that can claim over 60 years in trade, but Paul’s is one of the few who can. Situated right in the hub of the city’s restaurant district, with stiff competition on all sides, Paul’s has maintained its heritage and client base by grilling, frying and crumbing the best of the ocean’s fish stock night after night. Meals are cooked on a grill plate behind the counter and served smoking hot; with the resultant seafood tasting sweet, salty and unadulterated. Fresh king george whiting, barramundi, oysters, prawns and Moreton Bay bugs all feature strongly on the menu. The desserts, wine list and coffee all hold their own too.
The top quality fish comes with simple salads and chips (or potatoes) in a casual atmosphere suited to any occasion. Some may find the food too old fashioned and other may criticise it for not moving with the times, but in a trend-driven restaurant scene it’s refreshing to find an original fish cafe that doesn’t divert too far from what it does best.
