Bypass the usual Adelaide CBD restaurants and try Jam the Bistro, a quirky, modern pub in the heart of the city. Serving smart Mediterranean fare near Chinatown, owner and Chef John Pana likes to keep things fun at this eccentric eatery, which functions as a cafe during the day before transforming into a fine-diner on Thursday and Friday nights, and stripping down for chilled Sunday sessions over the weekend.

If you live or work close by, you may have met this new kid on the block. Within walking distance to the markets, you might have spotted Jam the Bistro while on route. Perhaps talk of it has spread in your direction as it continues to catch the attention of Adelaide’s foodies. Large windows bring you into a space that is light, tight and simple. During the day, the black chairs are pulled up to uncovered, white tables, while the walls highlight several spotlighted artworks which reveal the restaurant’s contemporary taste. Likewise, owner and chef John Pana has crafted a menu of sophisticated and modern Mediterranean flavours.

The “let’s get started” section invites guests to begin with entrees such as char-grilled octopus with lime, tomato, rocket, endive, vincotto and verjuice, or some Saganaki cheese with white anchovies. “Serious food” is an appropriate header for dishes such as duck confit with pea mash, caramelised muscatels and baby carrots. Its camardo coffee bean jus should perk your curiosity. Local snapper fillet, pan-seared South Australian prawns and lemon with a Szechuan pepper reduction stray from the Mediterranean theme but are good examples of the kitchen’s close proximity to Adelaide’s seafood suppliers. Return to breakfast on Jam’s blue swimmer crab omelette.

Best Brunch in Adelaide:

Fantastic Brunch! We had the corn fritter special with poached eggs and avocado salsa, and the smoked salmon bruschetta they were both so delicious. The service was really helpful and the coffee was fantastic! The girl who seemed to be the supervisor went out of her way to get some freshly made hollandaise for my friend who couldn't live without it! Will be telling all my friends to come here immediately if not  03/01/2014

Fine dining in an unmistakably casual, yet quite hip, atmosphere. Feels like an alfresco art gallery with white linen table service. The menu is about quality, and it delivers it with appropriately modest, exquisite quantities of sensitively arranged produce for the savvy diner who wants to enjoy a casual, relaxing, leisurely-paced, adult dining experience without having to dress up for  05/12/2011
