An eatery and art gallery combined always holds promise for those wanting to feed their souls. Art and food, after all, are not far detached. To be captivated by colour and composition, stimulated by texture and intrigued by imagination – all are emotions shared between viewing an artistic creation, and sitting before a beautifully constructed dish. Now exhibiting is Giallo – a wine bar sharing the space of Greenaway Gallery.

Restaurauteur Derek Muir is a man with a vision – a place where people in the know can come to share sophisticated food and wine with good company. Whether that be local CBD business types wanting a quick but refined lunchtime gathering or appreciators of art looking for a place to rest in between exhibitions and performances – Adelaide’s Fringe Festival sees them flock in – his venue is a welcome cocoon for the cool and cultured.

An intimate 40-seater, it invites with a stylish terrace area and is perfect for a cheeky glass of Pol Roger in anticipation of a visit to the Greenaway Gallery next door. Clean lines and monochrome colours are balanced with the and evocative style of Adelaide’s famed artist, Annette Bezor.

In the kitchen, young chef Kamilah Kadir is turning heads with dishes such as York Peninsula squid medallions stuffed with prawn and tomato, or local pan-seared fish on grilled asparagus with a saffron beurre noir. Muir encourages all dishes to be shared so diners and wine aficionados can make the most of the menu. Although you may want to keep the likes of a salmon carpaccio with pomegranate jewels, snow pea tendrils and lime vinaigrette all to yourself.

Good, attentive service, interesting shared starters - Mediterranean style, perfect confit duck and Puy lentils, orange brûlée. Good and varied wine list with most available by the glass. Noise level OK. Tight squeeze between the tables. Recommended for food and servicereview  30/04/2011
