PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIASammy and Loula Klementou are some of Adelaide's best-known restaurateurs with three award-winning establishments to their name. Sammy's on the Marina, and Manny's and Stanley's Fish Cafes gathered regular crowds under their hospitable belt. They have now moved on and recently opened the doors of Cafe Mykonos in the gastronomic metropolis of North Adelaide. A few doors down from the iconic Piccadilly Cinema, many come for a pre-movie munch joining those who prefer to linger. Once settled on ultra comfy chairs, the buzz of the smartly styled room is contagious. Big Greek families, couples, corporates, groups of snazzy singletons - you name it, they are all here, with famous ones to boot - footy boots especially. The affable Sammy is mates with many AFL identities so chances are you will spot one mowing through moussaka between matches.
Seafood and char-grilled meat platters are the house specialty. The Olympian platter may have you punching above your weight with its load of lamb and chicken yiros, souvlaki, chops, quail, loukanika (spicy sausage), Greek salad and chips. Octopus comes pickled in an onion, garlic and green capsicum vinaigrette or char-grilled with red wine and olive oil on a platter with crumbed prawns, calamari, skewered prawns and scallops. Mezes provide a spectacular way of communal dining with the likes of sauteed chicken livers with caramelised onions, meatballs in salsa and Mum Toula's house-made haloumi. Goat's milk is collected at 5am to prepare this beauty for its pan-frying. (Please note the sign above the swinging doors - "Mum's Kitchen".) Finish your meal with a Greek liqueur coffee made with Metaxa brandy or some traditionally sweet baklava.
