Just a short walk from Adelaide’s city centre, step inside the green wonderland that is the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and discover a haven of good food in an idyllic setting. Overlooking the main lake in the centre of the gardens, the restaurant offers outdoor dining or an indoor retreat from the elements, complete with wraparound glass windows to admire the view. The restaurant, a converted band rotunda, is the perfect location for a relaxed family lunch or an intimate meal. Work up an appetite while strolling through the greenery and take a well-earned break at this fabulous restaurant.

The winter menu features a delicious range of innovative dishes, which show off the great variety of produce available in the region. Start the feast off with scallop, lobster and Pernod tortellini with radicchio and pancetta, or try the spice-crusted pan-fried quail with a carrot, lime salad and tzatziki. Mains offer a variety of tastes, from the red wine braised lamb shank with crisp polenta and herb mustard pesto, to the potato gnocchi with roast pumpkin, mustard fruits and sage brown butter for the vegetarians among us. The extensive wine list ensures guests are spoiled for choice. So sit back, sip on a glass of sparkling or two and savour the scenery.

It helped that we lost our way, as that just made the journey of discovery even more enticing. I suppose in real estate terms in was all about the location – as the gardens set the scene, wetted our appetite and provided the setting for what was to be a splendid lunch on a warm autumn day in Adelaide. My entrée read like a poem. Carpaccio of truffle infused quail with confit of the leg, cashew nuts, mandarin, witlof and Persian fetta . It was beautiful presented and light and burst in your mouth with a medley of flavours. The mandarins added a sweet element to the dish which was set off beautifully with the salty Persian fetta. Yummy! For the main, I ordered the roast South Australian snapper fillet with globe artichoke ravioli, grapes, almonds and verjuice with citrus beurre blanc. The fish was cooked to perfection and the presentation was beautiful. Again, it was a smart balance of flavours as the grapes set against the snapper and made a delightful combination. Staff and service was excellent without being overly obtrusive.review 08/06/2011
