If you need a curry fix then steer your elephant toward Beyond India, Modbury. This is the sister restaurant of its namesake in North Adelaide, where Indian chefs practice a myriad of specialist regional cuisine. The quaint rooms are decorated with ornate artworks, but for a beautiful view look to the kitchen doors rather than out the window, as a colourful parade of dishes stream out. The intoxicating aromas command your attention; the dishes create a spectacle of treasures on your table. You will then see, smell and taste the true pageantry of Indian cuisine.
The mixed entree platter for two will get your taste buds singing and dancing. It weighs in with samosas, pakoras, onion bhajia, seekh kebab, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and chutneys. Butter chicken is the front-runner in main course favourites, but let the unadventurous and predictable diner order it while you try a house specialty of barrah kebab instead (melt-in-your-mouth lamb cutlets flavoured with garam masala, coriander, ginger and yoghurt). Barramundi lovers are treated to hyderabadi fish korma; served as a fillet, it is sensationally cooked in organic yoghurt, turmeric and mustard seeds. Fire yourself up with a beef vindaloo, while vegetarians are delighted by baigan patata with its tandoor-roasted eggplant, capsicum and potato in ginger spice. If you’re left craving more then return for the bimonthly Sunday feast known as the “more than you can eat beyond buffet” - mouthwatering value! If your journey beyond India has inspired you sufficiently, ask owners George and Robby about their Indian cooking classes in Norwood.
