Want a change from the urban, minimalist approach to dining? D’Arcy Arms restaurant in Surfers Paradise offers a good old-fashioned experience for everyone from romantic couples to rambunctious groups. With 20 years of providing homely, professional service, D’Arcy Arms has built up a regular clientele who know they’re onto a good thing. Walking off the street into the restaurant is a bit like coming home. It’s chock-a-block full of Irish bric-a-brac and during the winter months there is an open fire to welcome diners. Warm breads fresh from the oven, St Patrick’s soup or Paddy’s prawn pot are just some of the ways to start the Irish feast. Steaks are a definite drawcard on the menu, along with lamb shanks cooked with Merlot, garlic, onions and rosemary served on champ potatoes. Then there’s Paddy’s pie of traditional Irish stew or pan-baked barramundi fillet with roast pumpkin, coconut curry sauce and crab mousse to tempt the rumbles. Head chef Shaun Stamford has 23 years’ experience under his belt working in resorts in Europe and, along with his team, has made quality the central focus of the menu.

If it’s something lighter you’re after then enjoy a drink or two and some snacks at the Irish bar; and relax on Saturdays and Sundays with live music from the resident harpist. During the summer months, enjoy the air-conditioned surroundings in the restaurant, or sit outside in the courtyard and have a pint while you enjoy the wonderful Queensland weather. It’s a little bit of Ireland in paradise.

OK, very friendly people, and the setting is good - as long as the pub-singer doesn't pipe-up, he's not that good, unless what he is playing is an instrumental. The roast beef lunch is pretty basic, and if you are hoping for greens, as we were, you might be disappointed, as all we had was beef (yummy) average roast spuds, and a heap of pumpkin - not even any horse radish - so take your own if you decide to eat there! On a plus side, the Guinness is very, very good, and there were some good beers on tap, but the white wine selection was poor, and pricey. We would like to eat there again, but they would have to up their game.review 24/09/2011
