PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAZafron on Brunswick is a unique little restaurant with a charming ambience that encourages guests to relax and soak up the alluring aromas, delicious food and fantastic live music. Like the cuisine, the design embraces a Persian influence which contrasts endearingly with the sleepy, relaxed vibe that is distinctively New Farm. The menu has been crafted so diners can enjoy not only the cuisine that is native to this exotic culinary location but also the style of eating, whereby groups can sample and share more than one dish and thus have a richer dining experience. The centrepiece of the restaurant is a Turkish barbecue that treats patrons to some exotic aromas of seasoned kebabs and sizzling spices.
For starters, share an array of Persian, Mediterranean and European antipasto platters and tapas dishes. Among these are the char-grilled vegetable stack and a heavenly French-style camembert tart filled with leek and potato, and served with a creamy tomato puree. For mains there is a great cross-section of choice – if you are a party of four or more dining on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night, the chef’s choice banquet comes highly recommended. Your table will receive a selection of bread, dips, starters and mains which can be shared among everyone. The house specialty is the chello kebab which comes with your choice of lamb or chicken, marinated in saffron, yoghurt and herbs and char-grilled on the barbecue. Accompanied with saffron rice, Persian yoghurt and a shirazi salad, this dish in particular has been the cause of many a contented smile. May I also add that from a personal experience, Zafron makes the best baklava I have ever tasted.
