PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAOwner and head chef at Tibetan Kitchen, Mingmar Sherpa, has been perfecting and serving the recipes he learnt from his grandmother and aunty in Nepal since 2003. Prayer flags and artefacts adorn the walls of this intimate and welcoming restaurant, which is a little slice of Tibet and Nepal with a dash of Sherpa. Located just over from the main drag of West End, Tibetan Kitchen offers a variety of dishes including the ever popular Tibetan momo which comes stuffed with meat or vegetables and topped with home-made tomato chutney.
A Kathmandu special of tender chicken pieces or lamb marinated in yoghurt, fresh ginger and garlic sauce or fried chicken or beef served with a spicy baked potato are just a couple of the entrees to get the tastebuds working. There are Tibetan and Sherpa breads to go with dhal and soups from Tibet and Mount Everest. The mains, starting at around $9, include goat curry and a traditional Sherpa stew. For seafood lovers, Mingmar has created a variety of dishes that feature calamari, tiger prawns and barramundi while vegetarians can breathe easy with nine dishes to choose from. Tibetan Kitchen offers the diner a unique experience with traditional fare from the roof top of the world.
