PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAAn age-old truth: cafe menus can rouse an energy, awaken an excitement and call on salivation in a manner no other bill of fare can match. Nestled fittingly along flora-lined Racecourse Road, The Naked Lime Delicatessen and Cafe delivers just such an experience. With enough gourmet salads, sangas, cafe/deli goodies and breakfast selections to fulfil an active imagination, reading the list of offerings is both tantalising and a little confusing. Reeling in my comfy cafe chair I settled on the sweet potato, haloumi and corn fritters with petit salad and was umm-ing and ahh-ing over the summer-kissed Vietnamese mango rice paper rolls with peanut sauce. I also knew I would regret leaving without trying the caramelised pork and lychee salad. To make matters worse, crab cakes in a bed of baby spinach with horseradish mayonnaise had been recommended as the specialty standout. Willpower aside I ordered the roast pumpkin and beetroot salad with crispy prosciutto and goats cheese, a couple of the aforementioned crab cakes and a pink grapefruit Tiro to slurp.

If you come for breakfast, come prepared – no belts and your most fashionable elastic wasted pants please. Quality produce and ingredients, heart and a lil’ soul get mixed in with the cooking process in the morning. The resulting delights include the “haus” melt which begins with thick Como toast loaded with tasty cheese, double-smoked leg ham and vine ripened tomato. Sporting a fancy name, truffle-buttered field mushrooms share the plate with creamy scrambled eggs on toast. Naked Lime is a wicked little find with cafe food that has both flavour and edge.
