PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe Cottage Garden Cafe is exactly that, a cafe serving a wholesome menu of homemade cafe dishes that fill the emotional and gastronomic void of those who don’t have a cottage garden to call their own. Open for breakfast and lunch, this is a cafe with a difference because although it’s located in the midst of the city, it’s surrounded by greenery. Located in a small nursery garden, it looks like something straight out of a Better Homes and Gardens feature page and the outdoor setting is of a kind any homeowner would envy, featuring hardwood timber decking, beautifully handcrafted hardwood furniture and replete with vibrant ferns, palms and bromeliads.
The food is quality, homemade fare, but don’t expect huge servings because the options tend to revolve around smaller snacks rather than large meals. There are homemade pies, such as beef and Guinness or lamb and rosemary, served with salad. A far cry from your usual pie, these ones consist of delectable chunks of meat in a moist filling encased in flaky pastry. Breakfast on the weekends includes a wide selection of the usual favourites as well as some more unusual options, such as grilled haloumi with wilted spinach and field mushrooms, drizzled with rich balsamic and served with sourdough.
