DETAILSEncounter the optimum in Japanese fine dining and allow the staff at Sono Restaurant to take you on a cultural journey like no other, from the moment you arrive and are greeted by Kimoni dressed waitresses.
Those who are serious about their sushi can pull up a stool at the sushi bar, where the chef creates sushi and sashimi in a skillful display. Alternatively, choose one of the tatami tables where diners can sit and savour the authentic and beautifully presented Japanese meals.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe room’s thoughtful layout sees large groups seated at tables behind timber partitions or on tatami floor seating in a private room towards the back. The middle rooms often plays host to solo after-work diners who appreciate the polite, discrete service from the kimono-clad waitresses. A row of stools flank a timber sushi bar for those who like to get up close with the chefs.
The food too fairs far better than most of the city’s other Japanese offerings. Each dish is exquisitely presented in its own unique serving platter; soups in marbled ceramic bowls, large serves of sashimi cradled in carved wooden boats. Even the soy sauce comes in elegant miniature teapots and the complimentary cool towel (we told you the service was considerate) is folded up in a boat-shaped holder. Start with the sushi selection in an Oke bowl or shyumai (Japanese-style seafood dim sims). You can order steak teriyaki in wagyu for a little luxury; their regular beef cut however is still quite tender. As tender meats go, the slow-cooked pork in sweet soy is truly luscious and steeped in flavour.
