Old fashioned Italian hospitality never goes out of fashion, and doesn’t veteran restaurateur Andrew Baturo know it. His latest venture, Popolo, is part of a major revival for Southbank and the restaurant will focus on thin crust pizza, house-made pasta and a huge range of main meals from wild boar to pheasant. For that extra special touch, keep your celebrity radar on high as joint owners Paul Piticco (Powderfinger and Splendour in the Grass manager) and Dennis Sheehan (concerts infrastructure) may also be wandering around.

Popolo - User Reviews

Amanda:

Awesome suckling pig. The anchovie olives were an excellent starter. Loved the cocktails - awesome way to kill an afternoon, drinking cocktails and watching the river flow by. I will definitely be back!review 02/03/2012

Great location but food could be better. Whitebait fritters would have been better just served as whitebait. The veal envelopes more stodge than meat but the suckling pig was excellent. Most of our meal was tepid rather than hot which suggests poor kitchen organization rather than lack of cooking ability but they are new so maybe they are still finding their feet.review 27/01/2012

Lovely service, delicious starters but the mains are very ordinary. There were 5 of us dining and we all ordered a starter and main to share. None of us liked our mains (I had the risotto and it had to be the worst I have had... do not order it if you are a risotto fan. Took 3 bites and could not eat the rest). We all loved our starters though so I would recommend just eating a few servings of starters. The mains are not worth it - and overpriced for what you get.review 22/01/2012

UNFORTUNATELY....we must have choosen the wrong night. While this restaurant has a great feel to it and one of the best location in Brisbane we were very very disappointed. The menu is not very easy to read and understand and it is way OVERPRICED. It clearly caters for the rich and pompous and if you don't look anywhere near this you get the raw prawn...and talking about raw prawns that's what was on top of the pizza....and water you get asked if you want sparkling or still and get charged accordingly $8.50 a bottle in fact!!! I really don't mind paying big bucks but you have to come up with the goods and this place failedreview 21/01/2012

Popolo has great potential but at the moment is poorly executed. Our waitress harassed us literally every 5 minutes until we had ordered our mains. E.g. asking for drink orders before we had even read the menu, asking for food orders before we had read the food, asking if everything was okay continually. Then our drinks didn't turn up until and all our food arrived in very quick succession. It really made us feel very bustled (we were in and out in an hour) and there was no time to enjoy our food/drinks slowly (the opposite of what tapas is meant to do). Some of the food was delicious but overall it was very rich and fatty. My cocktail was delicious though. Hopefully with some time and experience for the waitstaff it will improvereview 19/01/2012

My wife and I went to this restaurant on 13/1/12. We didn't have much time, so the tapas menu was perfect. They have the best tapas menu we have experienced. We started with the caprese salad, and it was delicious. Next was the aracine balls. Very tasty, but could have been a little bit more moist. Then we had the baked sirloin. Just amazing. The table next to us were also giving big wraps to the suckling pig, and also the lamb shoulder. Overlooks the river and city, and it is worth a visit.review 14/01/2012

Steve:

Fantastic restaurant. Was most impressed by the staff - well managed and trained, friendly and made every effort to make our meal and night a special one. The food was up there with the best I've had in Brisbane - simple, creative and a well varied menu. No need to say much about the venue - if you go there and see the view you'll understand what I mean - best at sundown I would say. For such good food and wine I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxed the place is.... Perfect atmosphere for eating, drinking, talking and laughing. No complaints at all.review 08/01/2012

This brand new Brisbane riverside restaurant is just what this city needed. great great food in a amazing setting. stunning cocktails and decent wine list (needs a little work). The pizzas have just found that amazing balance between old world and new and the Panzotti and venison dish shows a truly creative man in the kitchen. I would give it 4 and half stars in I could. friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff.review 04/01/2012

Fantastic! Top location. Great variety of tastes. Amazing olives. Impressive tapas serving sizes. Friendly and professional staff - and didn't seem to mind we had little kids there. We’ll certainly be back.review 30/12/2011
