You won’t find a “meat lovers” option on the menu of classy Paddington pizza restaurant Pizzeria 1889, home of exquisite oven-fired pizzas and top-shelf grappa. On the promenade of the newly refurbished Barracks, Pizzeria 1889 is attracting a mod-set of discriminating pizza lovers.

On the promenade of the newly refurbished Barracks, Pizzeria 1889 is attracting a mod-set of discriminating pizza lovers. Pizzeria 1889 takes its name from the year the legendary Margarita pizza was invented by an Italian chef to represent the red, white and green of the Italian flag. The restaurant does not take bookings, and guests are served on a first come, first served basis. The drinks menu is short but well-endowed with a selection of Italian beers, wines, coffees, spritzers, aperitivos and digestifs.

It would be a crime to overlook the pizzas, but the “not pizza” selection is also hard to miss. Pizzeria 1889 offers fresh salads rich in colours and herbs, plus a range of other stimulating dishes, including the lamb shank ragu with penne, and pork saltimbocca with sage prosciutto and soft polenta. The oven-fired traditional pizzas are where Pizzeria 1889’s true passion lies. The roasted pumpkin pizza is speckled with flavour bursts of gorgonzola, pine nuts and spinach. Dusted with garlic and sprinkled with olive oil, the pumpkin is rich, moist and soft, complementing the light crustiness of the oven-fired pizza base. Pizzeria 1889 offers gluten-free options like the polenta and risotto dishes, as well as salads. Pannacotta and tiramisu make great desserts.

I was really disappointed with the service last night at Pizeria 1889. The head waitress gave two of the waitresses a dressing-down right near our table. She was having a go at them for not putting cutlery on customers tables and how "ANGRY!" that made her. She had a point, it was unprofessional, but so is giving the waitresses a serve in front of costumers. The pizza had burnt edges and was soggy in the middle. Overall the food wasn't great and the service was bad. review 14/12/2011
