It's five-star hotel ambience all the way at the Marriott's flagship restaurant - a grand, elegant space with soaring ceilings, polished timber columns, luxurious lounges, tinkling piano music and lashings of glittering marble. Entry is through the Marriott foyer on Queen Street Mall or from the outdoor dining terrace which is well shaded and affords glimpses of the river. After the breakfast rush, the bistro sees a mix of hotel guests and suits from the surrounding office buildings taking morning and afternoon tea, sampling the wine buffet, and on Friday and Saturday evenings one of Brisbane's best all-you-can eat seafood feasts.
When the buffet isn't on, Petries offers an a la carte menu featuring internationally-influenced fare that shows a little more thought and creativity than the average hotel menu. For entrees order the Chinese-style quail, smartly paired with ginger and carrot pikelets and sticky soy sauce, or the Moreton Bay bugs with mascarpone, avocado, tomato and lime infused marie-rose. A hotel bistro should be able to turn out a good steak and the beef choices here are winning picks for mains; try the char-grilled prime fillet with Szechuan roasted pumpkin, sauteed spinach, field mushrooms, burgundy jus and Cafe de Paris butter. The really impressive element of Petries though is the service - polite, fastidious and completely befitting of the five-star surrounds.
