PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAMahjongg – a cafe, restaurant and home-away-from-home – focuses on real food and fresh ingredients while offering exceptional prices to match. Subtly influenced by classic Italian and French cuisine, the menu shifts from boutique sandwiches to tapas, entrees, mains, desserts and pastries. At lunch, sandwiches are made with daily-changing breads and filled with gourmet ingredients like chorizo, brie, spinach and tomato. If you’re vegetable-minded, try the “primavera” which is filled with roasted capsicum, eggplant, mushroom, fetta and olive tapenade. The menu progresses through other food choices including Thai chicken skewers marinated in herbs, lime juice, fish sauce and an array of mild spices; crackling pork belly; seared scallops drizzled with an apple toffee sauce and the chef’s favourite of Persian duck (twice-roasted and infused in a master stock of aromatic spices and a citrus glaze).
One of Mahjongg’s long-time lures is undoubtedly its array of delicious deserts. Most of the goodies are handmade in-house, although a few are also crafted by a local Frenchman. Don’t miss out on lemon cheesecake with freshly-made lemon curd or a guiltless gluten-free tiramisu. And make sure to have a cup of De Bella coffee with your selection. With exceptionally friendly service, reliably great food from dawn till eve, Portside’s best kept secret is certainly getting its fare share of talk.
