LOCATIONTaking up a secluded cove in Margaret Street, River Brisbane City.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAMost city venues sadly lack personal feel, instead pushing patrons in and out like herds of cattle. A diamond in the rough, Maddigan’s offers a more intimate accessible ambiance, a meal to remember and a place to return to. Maybe it’s the gentle Irish influence, the super friendly staff or the beautiful afternoon summer breeze that accompanies diners; I can’t quite pin it. But one thing is for sure, this petite city space certainly makes an impact. The day consists of anything from great morning coffees to a quick business feed, relaxed lunch, family affair for dinner, after work drinks or a splendid meal with companions. Focusing on simple yet hearty meals, the menu presents uncomplicated man-sized home-cooked dishes, previously thought a fantasy in our current times of teeny-tiny tapas.
Surrounded by Oscar Wilde quotes and a lull of tasteful Irish music, select from fresh fish, “from the grill” meat and vegetables, plates to share or a couple of different pasta dishes. Tuck into the Barlors Creek pork chop; a Queensland pedigree infused with salt and sugar to create an amazingly moist and tender meat and served with a delectable pear relish. The beef and Guinness pie is brilliantly executed. The famous Irish stout adds magic to the thick gravy, and the whole comes dished up with peas, carrots and a chef-inspired mash. Maddigan’s does a swell crumbed snapper with chips and crispy garden salad. The bar has a thoughtful selection of beer imports and a considerable wine list to match. For something sweet, the dessert menu changes throughout the week; regulars on the board include gourmet ice-cream and kids desserts.
