The menu boasts over 60 dishes and references all the classic street-corner meals, from spicy, sinus-clearing laksas to everyone’s favourite red char siew pork.

Anyone who has been to Singapore raves about the local cuisine. A heady melange of Asian, Muslim and Western influences, food is a necessary social lubricant, with neighbourhood food courts or hawker centres usually consisting of a number of small stalls each specialising in one or two delicacies. It is this atmosphere and these flavours around which Little Singapore has based its offerings. The menu boasts over 60 dishes and references all the classic street-corner meals, from spicy, sinus-clearing laksas to everyone’s favourite red char siew pork. One highlight is most certainly the seven different rotis or Singaporean bread dishes available. A version of the unleavened bread found in many cultures, roti is very much a comfort food and comes highly recommended.

While the food may be authentic, the setting is certainly not. Far from the bathroom tile-inspired decor of the average Singaporean hawker centre, Little Singapore bears a tasteful outfit. Tables and chairs are dark wood with white marble inlay, while plush cream banquettes line the dining hall where walls feature frescos depicting colonial Singapore life. This contrasts with the ridiculously abundant plasma televisions positioned throughout the restaurant. The reaction to the restaurant’s opening has been impressive, with bookings required for weekday lunch; the hype, however is much deserved.

The food is fine, better than other places in market square but the service just isn't justifiable. Every time my partner and I go there the main oldest register lady 'serves' us in the worst possible manner I could ever imagine. I dont know if shes racist because she seems to only be horrible to the white, black, and some Asians that clearly aren't Chinese. If we are wanting to order she will serve every single person waiting (even if they arrive after us) before she serves us. One time she even waited 2 minutes until there was someone else to serve before us! She will snap at you if you ask her any questions, will treat you like your money isn't as good as hers and like you are stupid if you ask questions about the food. Recently we went on the weekend and when the total came to over $30 for two dishes we were shocked as they usually wouldnt be over $23. When we asked about it she replied "what? You don't know theres different menu for weekend and week day? There 40% surcharge. You dont want to buy then go away". When I looked at the prices some dishes were 40% more and some were less which was confusing as she didnt say "up to 40%". Terrible service from her; she is the only one there every day and night working the register so theres no way to avoid her rudeness so that was the final straw we will NEVER go back again. review 04/03/2012

This is a fantastic restaurant. The service is A+ and the atmosphere and music is awesome. The food is on par with a five star restaurant. The staff are friendly and attentive and even the chefs seem happy. We will be dining here more often. review 06/07/2011
