PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
Brisbane has only a handful of establishments that have made the requisite efforts in every aspect of the restaurant business to truly wow their clients. Fortunately, in Conrad Treasury’s The Lab Bar and Restaurant, we have an institution that has gone to great lengths, with an absolutely stunning wine list, modern and sophisticated cuisine, and a setting that is unquestionably impressive.

Guests walk past the many framed awards on the foyer wall before encountering the striking monolithic dark-wood bar that guards the contents of one of Brisbane’s most impressive wine lists. As you sit down at the impeccably attired white-cloth table, your entree may be ocean trout tartare with ponzu dressing, cucumber jelly and flying fish roe. The waiter may recommend the veal scallopini, considered the signature dish, the wine-based sauce matching perfectly with the suggested wine ‘02 South Australian Chardonnay, whose buttery palate works hand-in-hand with the tastes and textures of the dish. Finish your night with a dessert from a menu that matches the skill of a classically trained sweets chef with iconic South East Queensland tropical fruits and a cheese board tailor-made to match your next bottle of wine. If it’s a confident high-end dining experience you are looking for, The Lab pulls out all stops, leaving each guest suitably delighted.

Nicholas Wong, April 2009

DETAILS
Influenced by the emerging trend in restaurant to preserve historical character whilst modernising the overall atmosphere, the lab is a fascinating combination of old and new. Named after the historical Lands Administration Building in which it is located, the beautiful cedar bar, which is well over 100 years old and was originally the old shipping counter from Brisbane’s Naldham house, has been preserved as a major feature of this stylish venue.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
The sleek atmosphere and sophisticated service compliment Chef, Lee Kuhnell's menu beautifully. Best described as Modern Australian the menu is brimming with fresh local produce. labs unofficial signature dish, veal scaloppine, sand crab flesh & asparagus with whipped potato & egg chardonnay sauce is deservedly popular. The attitude is simple yet seductive - good food, expertly prepared. Good wine, beautiful surrounds and attentive service.

As with the menu, wine is a seriously exciting business at lab bar + restaurant. One of the most distinguishing features of the space is a wine cellar of over 500 wines - and a Grange Hermitage collection unique in Brisbane. Many wines are available by the glass and food matching tips are offered to ensure all textures and flavours are considered.

THE DECK
For those seeking something a little more casual, consider The Deck. Dining al-fresco has never been so stylish. This stunning outdoor area was created with the aim of capturing the great Queensland tradition of dining on the back verandah, enjoying the sun and breezes. With it's own light menu, The Deck seats 40 comfortably and is perfect for a relaxed lunch.

Tip: There's an endless array of entertainment at Conrad Treasury every night of the week so perhaps see a live band, or catch some comedy after dinner. Make a night of it....
